Choose a learning environment today that positions your child to be a leader tomorrow
Who would ever have thought that we would be in this position after starting school at the beginning of last year – 2020? Life has thrown us a curved ball and we have had to adapt and make the most of every situation we have been faced with. The journey has not been an easy one but with God on our side we are ready to face another year at Redwood College La Lucia.
I cannot be prouder of each and every Redwood College student who epitomised our 2020 theme – #Standtall. During an exceptionally challenging year every student, staff member and parent certainly pushed themselves out of their comfort zone and lived up to our theme. Starting 2021 with the Covid-19 pandemic still very much part of our lives it is fitting that our theme for 2021 is – ‘Rooted’. Rooted has multiple meanings for our school. We certainly have all our faith and trust in God as we start another year – we are ‘rooted’ in His love and know that He will provide for us at school and in our lives. Many new relationships were established in 2020 and these can be further ‘rooted’ as we build on the foundations laid. Roots grow down into the earth and as we develop and look to create a ‘community environment’ at Redwood these ‘roots’ represent this environment. Our accompanying scripture verse is Col 2:7 – “ Rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
I have absolutely no doubt that we are, again, going to create great memories, friendships and community as we venture into this year. I could think of nothing better than to invite you to enjoy this journey with us.
Redwood College La Lucia is blessed with many things – excited and engaged pupils, contributing parents, innovative and caring teachers, comprehensive academic programmes, diverse and inclusive sporting and cultural opportunities, a magnificent campus to support all our work and a way of bringing faith, culture and community into harmony.
At the heart of our day to day lives at school are our values – Respect, Excellence, Innovation, Godliness and Integrity. In a relationship-based school every child is UNIQUE. However, their individuality remains a priority. Relationships make us feel safe. Every structure in our school is there to make our learners feel part of the Redwood family.
We would love to invite you to join us on our journey as we head into 2021.

In 1987, Victory Christian Academy (VCA) opened its doors for the very first time to eight students. Thus, began the legacy of Christian schooling in the La Lucia, Durban North area.
In 1993, after being housed in amongst other places, an office complex, a cinema and a church hall, VCA found its permanent home at 34 Ronan Road, La Lucia, Durban.
Over three decades the school has grown to its current status as a private school of choice.
The Personal System of Instruction offered by the school has proved to be pioneering as many private schools are now following suit to meet international best practice standards.
In 2019, VCA transitioned to REDWOOD COLLEGE, becoming the flagship school of a branded chain of private schools within the Accelerated Education Enterprises (AEE) stable.
Redwood Schools are positioned to positively impact education through the delivery of innovative education solutions whilst remaining grounded in a solid Christian ethos and culture. The objective is to develop a footprint of branded schools that deliver academic excellence that is relevant in a fast-developing world.
The Redwood name is taken from the mighty Redwood forests that stand tall and weather the test of time. However, the brand borrows more from the Redwood forests than just a name.
The living mechanism and ecosystem of the Redwood forests provides living insights and principles that are adopted into the Redwood brand.
The unique root system whereby the surprisingly shallow roots of individual trees extend radially and intertwine with each other creates a sophisticated anchor that facilitates the entire forest’s growth, even in harsh environmental conditions.
The bark of a Redwood Tree is thick, fibrous and spongy. It retains moisture which protects the tree from external threats such as fire and insect infestation.
A Redwood forest is a vibrant ecosystem providing home, shelter and protection to a plethora of plant and animal life. The forests are a key component of a greater system whereby they serve to clean the atmosphere through the capture of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen.
Redwood learns from the forests and adopts the following core principles:
Each Redwood School will achieve more success as a result of belonging to the family as opposed to operating independently. The brand mantra is BETTER TOGETHER and this is inferred from the idea of belonging to something greater than the sum of the parts.
Excellence & Values
Redwood Schools stand tall as centres of academic excellence with a strong value system and commitment to both community and individuals.
Feels like home
The Redwood School ecosystem seeks to provide a vibrant learning environment for all learners – a place of shelter, a place called home, a place where individuals are valued, a place where values are essential, learning is central and potential is released.
At Redwood, we are profoundly aware that education systems world-wide are becoming redundant in the face of a fast-changing environment.
At Redwood we speak to and treat others the way we would like to be spoken to and treated.
At Redwood we strive to do the best that we can in all situations. Excellence is our standard of measurement which means we never settle for mediocrity.
At Redwood we honour God and seek His purpose. Raising up children with a strong value system and moral characteristics is as important as imparting knowledge.
At Redwood we are honest and show a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles and values.
