Learning today,
Leading tomorrow

Choose a learning environment today that positions your child to be a leader tomorrow

Redwood College La Lucia has enjoyed a positive start to our 2024 academic year. Over the past few years, we have intentionally planted a number of ‘seeds’ and with much faith, perseverance and determination, we have finally started to see these seeds grow. The result of the patience is an increased sized school, new curriculum and many new learning areas, as well as many formed partnerships, all of which result in a better offering for our learners. It is with much excitement that we look forward to another exciting year at Redwood College La Lucia.

As we head into this new year, our Theme for 2024 is ComMISSION. The word ComMISSION is a fusion of two essential concepts: Commission and Mission. This encapsulates our school’s dedication to being Christ’s ambassadors and actively engaging in the great ComMISSION which is to make disciples of all nations. The theme emphasises our heart’s desire which is to prepare our students not only academically but also spiritually and ethically so that they go forth into the world and are able to make a meaningful difference. The image of ComMISSION created for our 2024 theme symbolizes the foundation of our faith; the beginning of a new chapter; vast opportunities to carry out our mission and commitment to rise above challenges.  ComMISSION is more than just a theme, it is a calling. It reminds us of our purpose as a school community and encourages us to embrace our mission wholeheartedly.

I have absolutely no doubt that we are, again, going to create great memories, friendships and community as we venture into this year. I can think of nothing better than to invite you to enjoy this journey with us.

Redwood College La Lucia is blessed with many things – an awesome environment, excited and engaged pupils, contributing parents, caring teachers, comprehensive academic programmes, diverse and inclusive sporting and cultural opportunities and a magnificent campus to support all our work and a way of bringing faith, culture and community into harmony.

At the heart of our day to day lives at school are our values – Respect, Excellence, Innovation, Godliness and Integrity. In a relationship-based school, every child is UNIQUE and their individuality remains a priority. Relationships make us feel safe. Every structure in our school is there to make our learners feel part of the Redwood family.

We would love to invite you to join us on our journey as we head into 2024.

God Bless,

Bjorn Teunissen

Our History

In 1987, Victory Christian Academy (VCA) opened its doors for the very first time to eight students. Thus, began the legacy of Christian schooling in the La Lucia, Durban North area.

In 1993, after being housed in amongst other places, an office complex, a cinema and a church hall, VCA found its permanent home at 34 Ronan Road, La Lucia, Durban.

Over three decades the school has grown to its current status as a private school of choice.

The Personal System of Instruction offered by the school has proved to be pioneering as many private schools are now following suit to meet international best practice standards.

In 2019, VCA transitioned to REDWOOD COLLEGE, becoming the flagship school of a branded chain of private schools within the Accelerated Education Enterprises (AEE) stable.

Redwood Schools are positioned to positively impact education through the delivery of innovative education solutions whilst remaining grounded in a solid Christian ethos and culture. The objective is to develop a footprint of branded schools that deliver academic excellence that is relevant in a fast-developing world.

The Redwood name is taken from the mighty Redwood forests that stand tall and weather the test of time. However, the brand borrows more from the Redwood forests than just a name.

The living mechanism and ecosystem of the Redwood forests provides living insights and principles that are adopted into the Redwood brand.

The unique root system whereby the surprisingly shallow roots of individual trees extend radially and intertwine with each other creates a sophisticated anchor that facilitates the entire forest’s growth, even in harsh environmental conditions.

The bark of a Redwood Tree is thick, fibrous and spongy. It retains moisture which protects the tree from external threats such as fire and insect infestation.

A Redwood forest is a vibrant ecosystem providing home, shelter and protection to a plethora of plant and animal life. The forests are a key component of a greater system whereby they serve to clean the atmosphere through the capture of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen.

Redwood learns from the forests and adopts the following core principles:

Better together

Each Redwood School will achieve more success as a result of belonging to the family as opposed to operating independently. The brand mantra is BETTER TOGETHER and this is inferred from the idea of belonging to something greater than the sum of the parts.

Excellence & Values

Redwood Schools stand tall as centres of academic excellence with a strong value system and commitment to both community and individuals.

Feels like home

The Redwood School ecosystem seeks to provide a vibrant learning environment for all learners – a place of shelter, a place called home, a place where individuals are valued, a place where values are essential, learning is central and potential is released.
